Romans 1:21-23 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.
Having worldly knowledge of God is far removed from worshiping and praising Him as the one true God of the universe. The function of God's creation is to glorify and enjoy Him for eternity. This letter to the Roman Christians reminded them that they were failing in their purpose to glorify God. The reason behind this failure to thank and worship God was unbelief. They did not see the sustenance of their lives as blessings from God. The rejection of God by the Roman Christians led them to a "futile" way of thinking. The word futile means valueless and meaningless. They turned away from God and followed the teaching of worldly philosophers that came us with pointless theories as to what was the truth.
When humans reject the truth of the knowledge of God, it will darken their hearts and souls towards God, who is the light of the world. I was subbing for a third-grade class one day, and one of the kids said that he heard the Sun was going to burn out one day. I told him that when this life was over, we would not need the "SUN" because the "SON would light the world."
Humanity does not naturally move upward; it tends to devolve. When people evolve negatively towards God, the pull on their hearts and souls will spiral downward. There is a clear affiliation between sin and unbelief. Sin will cling to the will of humanity as gravity holds us tight to the earth. Evil from Satan will never display itself in its obnoxious nature.
Our hearts regulate our desire for knowledge and wisdom. The natural or worldly nature will disregard unbiased contemplation. Every sin added to the load that we carry will cause the burden to become heavier and heavier as time goes on. When there is a rejection of God's Word in one's life, one can enter a rejection of God's principles in their life.
We foolishly think that we could never worship idols as the Pagans did in Rome and all the world in the days when Paul wrote the Book of Romans; however, as our society progresses, so do our Idols. An Idol is anything that pulls our attention away from God. An idol is anything that crowds God out of our hearts and souls. An Idol is anything that we give our hearts and souls to that rightfully belongs to God.
People who refuse to
accept God's truth will naturally come up with their version of the truth. The
world believes that the truth is relative to whoever is speaking at the time.
In other words, the world falsely believes there is an alternate truth.
However, God's Word tells us that there is but one truth.
John 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the father except through me.
