Luke
2:27-30 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts.
When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of
the Law required, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying: “Sovereign
Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my
eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all
nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your
people Israel.”
The Holy Spirit moved in
Simeon’s life and led him into the temple when the parents of Jesus brought
baby Jesus to the temple. Simeon was joyful to see God’s promise of the coming
Messiah fulfilled in his lifetime. The elderly priest spoke these words when he
saw the baby Jesus: “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss
your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation.” The prophecy of
Simeon that day was filled with love for His Savior, and he had only seen Jesus
as a tiny baby that day. As Christians, we know more about Jesus than Simeon
did that day, so we should love Him more. Symbolically Simeon was keeping a
lonely watch through the night until the sun came up in the morning; for the
elderly Simeon, this was the sunrise that he had waited for so long. Since
Jesus had come to the world as a light for not only the Jews but also for the
Gentiles, it was as though the elderly priest could now be relieved of his
watch. The goal of Simeon should be our goal also; even though we cannot see
Jesus in person, as did Simeon, we can experience His light through our study
of God’s Holy Word. We can also see Jesus through our prayers, worship, and
sharing God's Word with the Lost souls God puts in our path.
We walked in
darkness before the Light of the world entered our lives to illuminate our
paths (Psalm 119:105). Peter tells us that we would do well to be mindful of
the light of Christ Jesus that illuminates our every step (2 Peter 1:19). The
Apostle Peter also tells us that God wants is for us to apply the truth in His
Word to our individual lives. God will open our hearts to what He has in store
for us as He did for Lydia when Paul witnessed to her and her whole household (Acts 16:14).
