Psalm 145:1-5 I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name forever and ever. Every day I will praise you and extol your name forever and ever. Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom. One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts. They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty, and I will meditate on your wonderful works.
When we set up our musical equipment for a concert, we always plug our power cables into surge protectors. There will be times that a surge of electricity will come in from the power company and could damage the sensitive electronic devices. These surge protectors will take the surge and not allow it to continue to the musical equipment.
There will be surges
of trials and tribulations that will inevitably come into our lives. Some of
these will only last a short time but some may last for a more extended period.
God is our surge protector but if we do not focus ourselves on Christ Jesus, we
will not have the protection from these surges of trouble that will unavoidably
come our way. There will be some people that will break down during these times
and others will be sustained. The difference is trying to deal with or handle
these surges of trouble ourselves or trusting that the Lord will keep His
promises that He will carry us through every storm.
A very good bible example of someone that always trusted in the Lord is King David. Very few of us will have to go through the troubles in life that David knew. As a young man he was pursued by King Saul because Saul was jealous of David, he tried on several occasions to take his life. David lost a child and his best friend. One of his sons tried to usurp his throne and David was forced to leave Jerusalem and survive for a while in the wilderness. These are just a few examples of what David went through; you can read his life story in the bible for the “rest of the story”.
No matter what trials and tribulations David had to endure he always found peace and hope in God. When others might fall apart in these situations David soul was always sustained. He was able to do this because he always focused his entire being on the Lord; he was totally surrendered to God, his will, ways and agenda were God’s not his own. Because of this he had an intimate relationship with God and obeyed His wishes and commands.
We would be wise to adhere to the ways of David. We will be able to maintain the peace and joy meant for us no matter how difficult these surges of trouble may become or how long they last. The answer is to focus on what the Lord has for us to do and not on the troubles that will come our way. In this Psalm we read today we find our “surge protector”. You will find in this great psalm how David praised the Lord every day, not just the days when things were going great. He speaks of how we should pass this along to future generations and meditate on God’s wonderful works, not on our own agendas and works.
What are our priorities for our time, do we set aside a time every day for prayer and bible study? To get to know someone well you must listen to what they have to say, and to get to know God you must do the same thing. What God has to say to you is written down in His Holy Word, by spending time in the bible you will be drawn closer and closer to our precious Lord and Savior.
God is our “Surge Protector” but if you do not plug yourself into Him, when the surges of trouble come, and come they will, you will have to bear the force of the tribulation yourself. God wants to bear the burdens for us, all we have to do is call on Him and allow Him to take control (Matthew 11:28-29).
