Bible Verse of the Day Sunday July 10th, 2022

Proverbs 1:10 My son, if sinful men entice you, do not give in to them.

Since life on this planet began, parents have warned their children about the dangers of following the wrong crowd. Possibly, Adam and Eve warned their children about the temptations of Satan to go against God’s Word. This danger does not only apply to young people; the crowd we, as adults, choose to spend time with will have an overwhelming impact on us.

In this Proverb today, a parent is warning one of their children about the dangers of following sinful people. This concept is similar to today’s gang mentality. The gang members will promise that the gang will protect the new inductee. Furthermore, they tell the new prospective member that they will all get rich if they go along with their evil plans (Proverbs 1:11-14). This wise parent sees far ahead of the instantaneous enticement of the gang’s empty promises. There is nothing that the “gang” will do that will bring prosperity. On the contrary, the only result of their evil schemes will be the downfall and death of every member of the gang (Proverbs 1:19).

The thesis of this proverb can be understood not only as the bond between a parent and their children but as God’s direction to His children. Solomon paints a clear depiction of the personal danger of murder, theft, and covetousness, as God’s direction given to us as His children (Exodus 20:13; 20:15 & 20:17). As a child must heed their parents' warning because they know better, we must follow the guidance of our Heavenly Father because He sees time in this life from the beginning to the end.

It can be very tempting to follow the advice and fall in with the wrong crowd of people. Satan will tell us what God has told us in His Holy Word is not true. In much of the same manner that He tempted Eve and told her she would not die as God said if she took the forbidden fruit (Genesis 3:1-5). The admonition is crystal clear, judge wisely in the company in which we place ourselves.
