John 2:23-25 Now, while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, many people saw the signs he was performing and believed in his name. But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person.
These three verses concern the
nature and character of our belief in Christ Jesus. The idea of the people that
surrounded Jesus that day was shallow and insincere. They could have well
believed that Jesus was some prophet; however, their belief was not of the
heart and rested on a misapprehension. They were more than willing to follow
Jesus as long as they saw him as a fortune teller or a soothsayer. They saw no
signs that Jesus indeed did; they were signs of their own imagination (John
12:39-40; 16:4). Their so-called belief was nowhere near acceptable to Jesus;
thus, “He would not entrust Himself to them.”
Today, as it was in the days
spoken of in these verses, there is still genuine and ingenuine belief in the
Gospel of Christ Jesus. There has always been authentic and unauthentic faith
and trust in Christ Jesus. We must surrender ourselves to the indwelling of the
Holy Spirit to sincerely believe that Jesus is the savior of all humankind.
People can believe in the miracles of Jesus and not trust or accept His
sacrifice on the Cross of Calvary for their salvation. There is no
judiciousness in placing our trust in counterfeit and spurious impostors who
falsely claim to be a person of God.
We could say that Christ Jesus
did not and does not believe in all people’s belief in Him. Humans can only see
the outside actions of other people; Christ Jesus sees much deeper. He
considers the genuine person that we are because He knows the desires and
aspirations of our hearts and souls.
There are Christian leaders today who desire loyalty to themselves from their followers. However, Jesus is not and will never be fooled by insincere and double-minded people (James 1:8). As we continue in our sanctification process and spiritual growth, we will learn that we can trust in Him and see our Christian walk become sweeter and sweeter as every day passes.
