1 Corinthians 10:24 No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.
The people of Corinth were
very mindful of their rights; however, Paul attempted to teach them that it was
more important to seek the good of others. The words from Paul came from Christ
Jesus to all people down through the ages; we should be more others-oriented.
Unfortunately, too many Christians are far too concerned about their material
attainments, which prevents them from reflecting the light of Christ Jesus to
the World. Many people, including many Christians, think of how it will affect
them. The World we live in is an “it’s all about me” society. Christ Jesus
teaches us from God’s Holy Word that self-regard opposes what our purpose in
this life is supposed to be (Jeremiah 45:5; Philippians 2:3-5).
Too many Christians fall into
Satan’s trap of self-absorption and claim that “People just do not appreciate
all that I do” and “I just do not get the recognition I deserve.” We permit our
feelings to be hurt, wearing them on our sleeves. Many Christians are satisfied
looking out for number one and seeking the credit of others for our service to
God. The Blood of Jesus did not save us to seek after our own benefit. Jesus
expects us to use our lives to help others come to a saving knowledge of the
Gospel of Christ Jesus. As Christians, we must be an excellent example of what
happens when someone places their complete faith and trust in God. We must live
a life that, like Jesus, shows kindness and love to all people (John 13:1-17).
When we think more of the
people around us than ourselves, the desire for self-interest will fade away.
Our desire to focus on our plans and schemes will slip quietly into the past,
and we will be excited to follow God's will for our lives. As Christians, we
have been set free from the evil forces of Satan. This freedom is not to say
that Satan will stop attacking us because it will always be a daily battle, but
we are not alone in the fight against this World's evil. Because of the freedom
we have through the substitutionary work of Jesus on Calvary, God is sending us
out to do His work for the benefit of all people.
