Ephesians 1:18 I pray that
the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope
to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy
people.
In our modern world today, the "heart" is thought of as the primary center of our passions and feelings. However, in the world of antiquity, especially the Greek and Hebrew cultures, the heart was seen as the center of knowledge, understanding, thinking, and wisdom. When one of the New Testament writers uses the word "heart," this is what they had in mind.
Therefore, Paul's prayer for the Ephesians and all who read these words down through the ages will have our hearts and souls enlightened. So that the symbolic eyes of our heart would be opened and allow the Light of Christ to aluminate every corner of our heart, that is, our knowledge, understanding, thinking, and wisdom. Emotions are essential in our lives as Christians, but only when they are under the Holy Spirit's control, which will guide and direct us to God's truth.
To enlighten the eyes of our understanding means that the light of Christ has illuminated every single speck of our innermost being. His light is shining on us from within ourselves and continuing to reveal the truth of God's Word. This enlightenment is what happened to Paul on the "Damascus Road" and the two disciples on the "Road to Emmaus" when God opened their eyes, and they recognized Jesus as who He was (Luke 24:31-32).
Many Christians are in the dark, so to speak; the eyes of their hearts have not yet opened. Many Christian hearts have no eyes, which is the only way to discern the absolute truth of God's Word. God's desire for His children is that both are combined. The primary objective of Satan is to cause spiritual blindness, but God's wish is that His light shines brightly in our minds, bodies, hearts, and souls (2 Corinthians 3:3-6).
When the light of Christ Jesus shines on our hearts, there will be no corners left in darkness, and we will see the calling of God on our lives, as well as our inheritance into the Royal Family of God. The knowledge that comes through the power of the Holy Spirit will be in our minds and hearts. All this is so we can know the true hope by which He has called us, thus gaining a deep understanding and appreciation for "his glorious inheritance in his holy people."
