Bible Verse of the Day Tuesday August 30th, 2022

1 Kings 19:12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.

God is not limited to any particular manner or approach He uses to reveal a more profound truth concerning Himself and His Holy Word. In the Book of 1 Kings, we first hear about the prophet Elijah in the 17th chapter. In the 18th chapter, we read about Elijah’s encounter with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. (More about the life and ministry of Elijah in 2 Kings 2:1-2). Elijah had protected 50 prophets of the one true God from Jezebel, the evil wife of unarguably the evilest king ever to ascend the throne in Israel, King Ahab. After God sends down fire to consume Elijah’s sacrifice on Mount Carmel and the false God Baal sends no fire to consume the sacrifice of the false prophets, Elijah mocks the false prophets and then kills them. This action enrages Queen Jezebel, who seeks to kill Elijah in the wilderness and prays to God to take his life.

However, God had more that He wanted to teach Elijah about Himself, as He does with us today. We will never learn all we need to know about God and His great plan in this life, but God tells us when He is finished with us and not the other way around. Elijah grumbled to God that he was the only faithful follower of God in the world. Elijah needed to understand what we all need to realize: God’s plan is not about our success, but His plan and purpose span and extend to all eternity.

As Elijah prayed to God to take his life in the wilderness, God sent an earthquake and fire, but God was not in any of these. Then God sent a gentle whisper that brought Elijah to his knees. In this, God let Elijah know that humans will never come to God on their own, but the long-suffering gracious nature of God, through His Holy Spirit, will draw all of those that surrender their hearts, minds, bodies, and souls to our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus. Even though we will not always understand why we are going through specific trials and tribulations, if we only listen to God's still small voice, He will reveal to us His true and perfect will for our lives.
