Genesis 42:36 Their father Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my children. Joseph is no more, and Simeon is no more, and now you want to take Benjamin. Everything is against me!”
Many people think that they could handle anything that comes their way if the Lord would only reveal to them the outcome of any situation (Romans 8:28). We know and believe this promise from our Savior that everything works for good in our lives. Still, if we only knew what the good would be ahead of time. That, however, is not God’s way. He does not always show us the end of the path when everything is going to work out for good. Instead, God asks us to trust Him that He knows what is best for us, and He will never leave or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5; Deuteronomy 31:6). Years before Jacob made the statement in our text today, he had lost his beloved son Joseph. The Promised Land of Canaan was in the middle of a very long famine, his son Simeon was being held in Egypt, and they wanted his youngest son Benjamin to let Simeon go. The loss of one of our children is a burden that would be hard to bear, and Jacob had lost two of his and was about to lose the third one. In deep despair over this trial and tribulation that had befallen his life, he said, “Everything is against me!”
At
the end of the path, it was very apparent that God had a plan for Jacob and his
family that would turn out for good. They were able to move to Egypt to escape
the famine in Canaan, and Jacob not only got his two sons back but reunited
with his son Joseph. In addition to the good that came to his life from this,
Jacob also discovered he had two additional grandchildren. God made his
offspring into a great nation.
It’s like driving a car at night. Our headlights never shine to our destination; they only illuminate about 150 feet ahead of us. But that does not prevent us from progressing forward; we trust our headlights. All we need is sufficient light to keep us moving forward. God’s Word is the light to our paths (Psalm 119:105). Like the headlights on our cars that only shine a few feet ahead of us at a time, God’s Light does not show us the good at the end of the path. But, he does show us the way, light the path and promise that all things will work out for good in our lives.
If there is a situation in your life that you cannot see how it could work out for good, hold on to that truth from Romans 8:28. You can be assured that God is working for you, and He has a plan that will bring you the ultimate good.
If we turn off the headlights on our cars and try to drive, we will likely end up in some ditch. The same applies to God’s Light; it will keep us out of the trenches of depression, despair, anger, and resentment. God guides us in everything that happens in our life, so we can confidently leave everything in His Hands. We will never stumble when we walk with God’s light to light our path.
