Genesis
16:13 She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: “You are the God
who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”
When Abraham and Sarah
could not have a child, Sarah sent her handmaiden to Abraham to conceive a
child in her place. However, after the child was born, Sarah began to mistreat
Hagar, her handmaiden. The young servant girl wanted to escape the
ill-treatment of her mistress, but she had no idea where she was going; she
took her son Ishmael and fled into the wilderness. Hagar suddenly realized that
the desert was a forsaken and solitary place and that her baby boy and herself
would soon die of starvation. Then, one day by a spring, an Angel of God spoke
to her and assured her God knew she was in such dire straits and that His eyes
were with her.
The knowledge that God was watching over her gave her hope and great contentment. We can find Her response to the messenger of the Lord in Genesis 16:13, “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.” We can have this assurance that God’s eyes are continual with us. We can have faith and know beyond any doubt that nothing that happens to us takes God by surprise. Our God is omnipotent and possesses the power to resolve any dilemma we find ourselves in, regardless of the severity of the situation. We will never experience a time that we are not in the sight of God or forgotten by Him (Psalm 33:18).
If you find yourself today in some distressing condition, maybe an illness or ministering to someone that needs constant care. You might be grief-stricken because of the recent loss of a loved one. On the other hand, you could be going through a deep depression or discouraged by something in your life that is not what you wanted to happen.
Sometimes in our lives, we want to see God work in some miraculous, supernatural way when we find ourselves on some rocky road. Then when God works outside our perceived pattern through which we think He should work, we become disenchanted or even frustrated. Sometimes we might even go further into Satan’s snare and disbelieve it was even God altogether. If we took some time to meditate on what God has done for us, what he is doing today and will continue to do in this life and throughout eternity, we would see many times that God has acted in ways that we might see as coincidental. There are no coincidences in the Kingdom of God; God has a reason for all He does. It could be that He has some divine engagement for us to follow (Acts 8:26-40), or He could teach us a lesson about keeping our faith in Him (James 1:2-4).
No matter what valley you may be walking in, you can continue with the assured knowledge and faith that God is always with you and will never leave or forsake you. Like Hagar, who was alone and hungry with a small child in the wilderness so many years ago, you can always know that God’s eyes are always watching over you.
