1 John 2:28 And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears, we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.
When John tells us to
“continue in him,” he encourages us to fellowship with Christ Jesus. To
continue in him means that we believe and place our faith and trust in His
great promises, not some of them but all of them. In continuing in Him, we are
saying that we trust Him in all aspects of our lives. Continuing in Him also
means that we are willing to follow His will for our lives, not our plans and
schemes, to bloom where God planted us. But unfortunately, it also means that
we will have to deal with some sins that may not be very easy or pleasant for
us.
To continue in Christ means
that we are stretched out in our excitement and expectancy of the coming of
Christ Jesus to the earth to take His children home. If our expectation of His
second coming is that it could happen at any moment, we are always ready when
He does come back. A gospel song says: “what a day it will be when my Savior I
shall see.” It will be a glorious day when we stand in front of our Lord and
Savior Christ Jesus and hear the words: “well done, my good and faithful
servant.”
This verse states that to
continue in Him means that we will be confident and unashamed before him at his
coming. Having confidence means believing and trusting in the great promises in
God’s Holy Word. It also means that we willingly and joyfully serve Him with
our hearts, minds, bodies, and souls. Furthermore, it indicates that we allow
the Holy Spirit of God to direct our every thought and step.
Continuing in him means we are
willing to follow His will for our lives and forget our grand plans and
schemes. Continuing in Him means being ready and prepared to do whatever He
asks us. It also means that sometimes we have to radically deal with some sin
and turn our backs on worldly pleasures. We will await His coming with
confidence by dealing with all these things.
