Hebrews 7:26-27 Such a high priest truly meets our need —one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his sins and then for the people's sins. Instead, he sacrificed for their sins once and for all when he offered himself.
The core thesis in the Book of Hebrews is on the High Priesthood of Christ Jesus. In verses 26-27, the comparison spotlight is shined on the difference between other High Priests and the High Priesthood of Christ. As our High Priest Jesus has met all of our needs in His intercessory work for us on the Cross of Calvary. Christ Jesus meets all of our needs, and there is no need for another High Priest because He intercedes on our behalf before the Father (1 John 2:1). Our needs are, first and foremost, paying the debt for our sins that we cannot do on our own, Christ Jesus has paid that debt on our behalf. However, our needs continue beyond there because in serving God we need a clear conscience. Our High Priest has offered Himself blameless and perfect before God (Hebrews 9:14). We also need to be able to worship and praise God and our high priest has made that possible (Hebrews 13:15). Our needs are many, and our High Priest, Christ Jesus, has and will always meet every demand we have (Hebrews 2:17-18; 4:15-16; 7:25; 13:21).
Nothing in the earthly
life of Christ Jesus would prohibit or exclude Him from being our High Priest,
that spoke for us before the Father. Jesus was tempted by Satan just as we are,
He experienced trials and tribulations the same as we do, and He did not give
in to sin during those trying times. He met our need for a savior by offering
Himself as a one-time sin offering on our behalf. Since Christ Jesus was
sinless, unblemished, and blameless, He then could offer Himself as a final
sacrifice for our sins, which assured us salvation and eternal life. Jesus does
not need to offer himself in repeated sacrifices for our sins His sacrifice on
the Cross was a one-time offering of His precious blood that coves our sin for
eternity. He offered Himself up not only willingly but joyfully as our
sacrifice for sin past, present and future and then sat down at the right hand
of the throne of God (Hebrews 12:2),
Charles Spurgeon said:
"The believer should glory in these passages exalting Jesus and showing
His superiority." The superiority of our Lord Jesus Christ is a topic that
will only interest some. To many people, it will seem a piece of devotional fantasy,
if not an idle tale. Yet there will ever be a remnant according to the election
of grace to whom this meditation will be inexpressibly sweet." Because
we have a sinless and perfect High Priest that offered Himself as a one-time
sacrifice for our sins, we can now know a peace that surpasses and exceeds all
worldly understanding.
