2 Timothy 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Three
terms are prevalent in this verse of scripture, "diligent,"
"rightly divided," and "ashamed." These three expressions
speak directly to our responsibility as disciples of Christ Jesus to study
God's word and present the Gospel with how we live our lives. The verse begins
with being diligent; this conveys a zealous persistence or a deep-down desire
to know Jesus, have a sweeter relationship with Him, and serve Him with all of
our hearts, mind, body, and soul.
When
Paul speaks of "rightly dividing" the Word of God, he is talking
about telling only the truth of God's Word, understanding, and knowing the Word
of God. This understanding and knowledge can come only from a regular,
faithful, and diligent Bible Study program, self-study, and group study. Our
Bible Study must also include a humble and active prayer life. As followers of
Christ Jesus, we will have an innate desire to learn more and more about God
and His Word. This yearning also comes with a great responsibility to share our
knowledge with the ones around us.
In a
worldly court of law, witnesses tell what they know about the case. A witness
for Christ Jesus will tell others about their personal relationship with Christ
Jesus and what He will do for them. When Jesus first began His earthly ministry,
He called two fishermen, Peter and Andrew, and told them He would send them out
to fish for people (Matthew 4:19). Fast forward a little over two thousand
years later. Jesus is doing the same for you and I; He is calling on us to
spread the Gospel to all the earth (Acts 1:8).
We
are not alone on the path to understanding more about the Gospel of Christ
Jesus; we have a companion, The Holy Spirit, that will illuminate our path and
lead us to a better understanding of the Word of God. As we pray and study, the
Holy Spirit will help us better understand who Jesus is and what He has done
and will continue to do for His children. The Holy Spirit writes the ways of
God upon our hearts so we can love others, serve our Lord, and share the Gospel
with those around us. Therefore, we are to read and study God's word regularly.
We should not be ashamed of the good news of salvation by Grace through faith
plus nothing, in Christ alone, which is the love and power of God to save souls
from Hell and eternal separation from God and lead all that follow Him to life
everlasting.
