Zephaniah 1:17 I will bring such distress on all people that they will grope about like those who are blind, because they have sinned against the LORD. Their blood will be poured out like dust and their entrails like dung.
The judgment that will befall those who do not know
Christ Jesus is because they have committed the only sin that will send one to
Hell, which is a rejection of the saving grace of Christ Jesus. We find in all
three Synoptic gospels that the only unforgivable sin is Blasphemy of the Holy
Spirit (Matthew 12:31; Mark 3:28; Luke 12:10). Blasphemy is the act of
displaying contempt towards God. God became flesh and dwelt among humanity in
the person of Christ Jesus so that He might sacrifice His perfect human blood
to atone for our sins. When people reject the free offer of salvation, it
demonstrates contempt for the greatest act of love in human history. God’s Holy
Spirit is what He left here to lead, guide, and direct our every step. When one
rejects that most generous offer, they show contempt for the Spirit of God, His
Holy Spirit.
This warning from the Prophet Zephaniah was an
attempt to turn the people of Israel’s hearts back to the Lord their God. His
warning was specific; God would bring the most terrible torment on wicked
people who refused to repent and turn their hearts and lives to Christ Jesus.
On the other hand, the glorious news that applies to all that accept Christ
Jesus as their Lord and Savior is that we will not suffer the wrath that is
surely coming. Jesus was punished for our sins because we cannot pay the price
for our transgressions. We read in the bible that the wages of sin are death
(Romans 6:23), but Christ Jesus died on our behalf so that we will not perish
but have eternal life.
One of the saddest aspects of this life is that he
died for the sins of all people, even those who do not accept His sacrifice
(John 3:16). Even though so many will reject the offer of eternal life by
Christ Jesus and live separated from God for eternity, God still loves them.
Therefore, some have said that one might go to Hell unsaved, but one will not
go unloved.
