2 Kings 4:42-44 And there came a man from Baal-shalishah, and brought the man of God bread of the first fruits, twenty loaves of barley, and fresh ears of grain in his sack. And he said, give unto the people, that they may eat. And his servant said, What, should I set this before a hundred men? But he said, Give the people, that they may eat; for thus saith Jehovah, they shall eat, and shall leave thereof. So, he set it before them, and they did eat and left thereof, according to the word of Jehovah.
This
event from the Old Testament reminds us of miracles performed by Christ Jesus,
as recorded in the New Testament (Matthew 15:29-39; Matthew 14:13-21). Elisha
instructs the feeding of 100 people with only twenty loaves of barley bread and
some heads of grain (2 Kings 4:38). While the numbers are not as drastic as
they were in the New Testament accounts, the idea is still the same. The Lord
controls the miracle in the Old Testament, just like He was in the New
Testament reports.
These
examples of the miraculous provisions are lessons for us to understand that
Christ Jesus is the Bread of Life and that there is always enough. The Lord can
do more than enough with what He has given us in life. God is the Master of
cultivating the raw material we are and transforming our lives according to His
will. Jesus is the bread of life and will never fail us; he will never leave or
forsake us.
Jesus
informed the world that He is the bread of life and that all that comes to him
will never hunger; all that believe in Him will never thirst (John 6:26-27).
Those seeking Jesus wanted the bread that He could give them to satisfy their
carnal needs. The people in attendance on the day that Jesus fed the crowds did
not focus on the miracle but on what it could do for them. Today, people are
less focused on the significance of God's miracles and more concentrated on
their interests. Too many people seek health and wealth instead of what can be
theirs spiritually in and through Christ Jesus.
Jesus
told the people that day and told us today that physical bread will sustain our
mortal lives. However, Jesus offers all that come to Him the true bread of
life, of which He is. Many, even today, are looking for what God can do for
them to satisfy their human needs. That is why the health and wealth gospel is
so popular today. People are looking for what the gospel can do for them
instead of what they can do for the gospel.
We
can dine at the most extravagant buffet with every food known to humankind, but
within hours, we will be hungry again. However, if we seek after the true bread
of life, Christ Jesus, we will never hunger again. There is nothing that the
world has to offer that we need if we have Jesus, our creator, our sustainer,
and our Savior (John 6:35).
