Lamentations 3:24 I say to myself, "The LORD is my portion; therefore, I will wait for him."
Jeremiah was disseminating two main thoughts in this short verse
of scripture: his portion and patients. The Prophet bewails that God is his
portion. We see this another time in Psalms 16:5, where the psalmist states the
Lord is my chosen portion, my cup, and the security of my lot. Anything outside
God that we consider our portion, our cup, or our lot's guarantee will only
last a fleeting second in eternity. Any earthly lot that we cling on to will
eventually let us down. In this writing, we see Jeremiah mourning for the
destruction of his and the Children of Israel's home city of Jerusalem, as it
was under siege and eventually destroyed by the Babylonians. God never intended
the earthly city of Jerusalem to be their portion or the security of their lot;
that was supposed to be God Himself.
Too many today clings to their money, power, and fame as their security blanket, and when that fails, they are left adrift in an ocean of despair and hopelessness. If we will but only cling to God and realize no matter how much earthly fortune we acquire, it could all be taken away in an instant, and God will never let us down and will illuminate our paths by the Light of the World, Christ Jesus. Considering that God is loving and kind and will never leave or forsake us, Jeremiah reminds us that we can patiently wait on God because He will never let us down. Unfortunately, in our waiting for God's plan to come to fruition, Satan will engage in a lie designed to make us believe that God has forsaken us and that He does not care about our spiritual or physical well-being.
God never intended our lives to be a cooling of our heels or biding our time until He decides to do something in our lives. Waiting on God is not a deal that we strike with God keeps His end of the agreement, and we keep up our end of the bargain. Waiting on God happens through faith and trust that He will keep every promise He has made in His Holy Word. Many have attempted to count all the promises of God in the Bible, but the numbers are irrelevant; what is important is remembering that we will never take one step in this life alone. As children of God, as born again, washed in the blood, followers, and believers in Christ Jesus, we have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that will lead, guide and direct our every step.
As we wait on God to show us the path, He wants us to walk, let us always remember that we were left here on this earth, one heartbeat after our salvation, to spread the good news of the Gospel of Christ Jesus to a lost, dark and dying world (Acts 1:8).
