Luke 5:31 Jesus answered them, "It is not the
healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
God's Holy Spirit dwelt
in Christ Jesus, who was sent to earth by Father God to spread the good news of
the Gospel to all that had ears to hear. Next, he came to heal the
broken-hearted and bind up their injuries (Psalm 147:3). He came to declare
freedom to captives of Satan, set free spiritual prisoners, and dispense God's
favor on all that placed their faith and trust in Him as Lord and Savior.
Finally, Christ Jesus came to the earth to glorify the Father, and His name
would be the name above all other names (Philippians 2:9).
Shortly after John the
Baptist declared the Lamb of God was here on the earth, the long-awaited
promised Messiah came to take away the world's sins (John 1:29); Jesus began to
choose his closest followers. Andrew was the first, and He found his brother
Simon Peter, then Jesus found Philip, who found Nathanael. Later Jesus saw
Levi, called Matthew, sitting at a tax collector's table. Matthew was not
righteous; he was a sinner in need of a Savior. He was a Hebrew that the Roman
Government employed to collect taxes from the Jewish people. Matthew most
likely conned, deceived, and defrauded many Jews in his position as a Roman tax
collector. Nevertheless, he was a person that fell into the sort of people that
Jesus had come to save. Jesus came to this earth to call all sinners to
repentance, of which Matthew was one.
Before we cast stones of
judgment in Matthew's direction, let us look at ourselves in the mirror. We may
never collect Roman taxes, but we are all sinners in dire need of a Savior
(Romans 3:23), and there is not a speck of righteousness in any of us (Romans
3:10). We are all sin-sick and need the balm of healing found only in Christ
Jesus. We have only one thing to do to receive the forgiveness of sin:
surrender our lives to Jesus, placing our faith and trust in Him and not
ourselves or the world.
Only one class of people
cannot receive the healing powers of Christ Jesus for their sins. They are the
proud and self-righteous that refuse to recognize Jesus as the Savior of the
world, the one true promised Messiah, God in the flesh. So let all that have
accepted Christ Jesus as Lord and Savior and surrendered our lives, body, mind,
spirit, and soul to Him shout the good news of the Gospel from every rooftop.
There is a statement
that many Christian writers have written, this writer being one, that the way
we live our lives may be the one sermon message that leads someone to the
saving grace of God through our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus. Therefore, as
followers and believers in Christ Jesus, let us all strive to be a good reflector for the light of Jesus that shines out into this lost, dark,
and dying world. Jesus answered them,
"It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
