James 2:10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.
This verse is an unambiguous
notice that if one were, by some stretch of the imagination, be able to keep
just one or even a few points of the Law, breaking one point is breaking the
entire Law. James's use of the word "whoever" clearly points out that
there are no exceptions to this rule. This would mean that there is no one that
has ever drawn breath on planet earth, living today or will ever live that is
not guilty of breaking God's Law.
There has only been one that
was able to keep the entire Law without breaking even in one point, that is,
our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus. James uses the concept of keeping the whole
Law as a hyperbole of the all-inclusive unanimity of the Word of God. Christ
Jesus is the Word (John 1:1), the truth, and the complete Law. We cannot be
saved by following the Law because, simply put; we could never keep every point
of the Law. Christ Jesus did that on our behalf and then nailed the Law to the
Cross of Calvary (Colossians 2:14). In
doing so, Jesus negated the sin debt we owed that would condemn us to an
eternity separated from God. If it were somehow possible for one of us to be
justified through the keeping of the whole Law, then Christ Jesus would not
have had to suffer the shame, humiliation, and excruciating pain that He
endured in the time leading to His crucifixion and suffering and dying on the
Cross of Calvary (Galatians 2:16-21).
If we attempt to use the Law
for our salvation or even our sanctification, we will find ourselves under a
curse. However, if we will but place our faith and trust in Christ Jesus,
accept the truth that He alone kept every aspect and point of the Law and
becoming a curse for us, we will know eternal life instead of eternal death (Galatians
3:10-13). When James speaks of
stumbling, he is, in essence, saying that we make one misstep in attempting to
follow God's Law. In other words, if we break one law, it is equivalent to
breaking every one of the laws (Leviticus 19:37).
God's Law is perfect as God is
perfect and one, as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are one. If we
support some great weight with a chain and one of the links breaks, the entire
project will fall. We are only fooling ourselves if we boast of the few points
of the Law that we are keeping and intractably attempt to hide the points we
are not keeping. We cannot diminish or dismiss our sins because, in doing so,
we are belittling and disparaging God and what Christ Jesus did for us on the
Cross of Calvary. The only one way to assure that we are in step with Christ
Jesus daily is total and complete surrender of our hearts, souls, minds, and
bodies to Jesus and allowing God to have complete control of our lives. we only
have to commit one sin to make us sinners. If I am driving a nail with a
hammer, miss the nail and hit my finger, not only the affected finger will
throb with pain, but my whole body will be affected.
