Matthew 6:34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
In
the verses of this chapter on the Gospel of Christ, Jesus, as told by Matthew,
our Lord and Savior, tells us that God knows of our every need. In his
illustration of how much God cares and sees our needs, Jesus uses the birds of
the air. They do not "sow or reap" or store up food in storehouses,
yet God takes care of their every need. Jesus also points out that the flowers
of the field do not labor but are cared for by God. Then Jesus brings to our
minds a critical question. Can we add one heartbeat to our lives through
anxiety or worrying about tomorrow? When we worry about what will happen
tomorrow, we are saying to God that although you control this entire universe,
we do not trust you with our little spec of the planet. God desires all His
children to focus on today and leave tomorrow's troubles in His capable
hands.
As
followers and believers in Christ Jesus, we must comprehend God's priority
pyramid. It is easy to be drawn away from God and His will for our lives by the
lure of fame and fortune. The last thing that Satan wants is for people to
focus their lives on spreading the Gospel of Christ Jesus and being a reflector
for His light that shines out in this dark and dying world. Our Lord and
Savior, Christ Jesus, wants us to focus on the issues of high priority to Him,
which is the salvation of souls. How we live our lives could very possibly be
the sermon that a lost person needs to hear in order to come to God's saving
grace through Christ Jesus.
If
we really must worry about something, let it be today's things. The lion's
share of our anxiety and worry is over something we have no control over, and
wasting our time in that pursuit seems foolish. This concept is not to say that
we should not plan for tomorrow or remember what happened in the past. Both are
critical and of some importance. However, if our focus becomes centered around
the past or the future, we will lose focus on the significance of this day with
its issues and concerns.
God's
will for our lives is that we leave the past and the future in His Hands and
use what we have learned from the past to help us better serve Him in the
future.
