Jeremiah 31:31 "The days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah.
Bible history considered Jeremiah
the "weeping prophet" because of his tears when he witnessed
Jerusalem's collapse and the destruction of God's Holy Temple. The Bible counts
the prophet Jeremiah among the scores of prophets who foretold the Children of
Israel's reinstatement to the birthplace of their ancestors, the promised land.
In addition, he prophesied a glorious day when God would enter a new covenant
with the inhabitants of Israel, the people of Judah.
At the end of Solomon's reign,
the great homeland of Israel split into two nations, Israel and Judah. However,
the time is coming for this divided nation to be one again. The new covenant
spoken of here in this verse (Jerimiah 31:31) is a covenant that was entered
into by and through the precious blood of Christ on the Cross of Calvary. This
new covenant will be satisfied and confirmed when our Lord and Savior, Christ
Jesus, returns to the earth in his second coming.
The Children of Israel had entered
a provisional treaty with God at Mount Sinai during their wilderness wandering.
They promised God and each other to adhere to the laws Moses had brought down
from the mountain. God promised them great blessings if they would conform to
Moses's Law but forewarned them of the curses they would endure for
disobedience to the Law. This original covenant received confirmation with the
blood of sacrificial animals. However, the new covenant that God entered with
the Children of Israel became sealed for eternity with the Blood of Jesus.
The Old Covenant between God and
the Children of Israel was conditional on the people following certain
precepts. However, the New Covenant is unconditional and sealed with the
precious blood of Jesus that He shed on the Cross of Calvary. Therefore, the
New Covenant only requires faith in God and a recognition that Christ Jesus is
the promised Messiah, as well as a belief and trust that He laid down his
earthly life on Calvary to atone for the sins of all people (John 3:16).
The New Covenant, sealed by the
precious Blood of Christ Jesus and promised to the Children of Israel, has
bestowed great blessings on us as born again, washed in the blood, followers,
and believers in Christ Jesus. This new covenant sealed by the blood of Jesus was
given us the church, the body of Christ, during this dispensation of Grace.
This New Covenant is unconditional and is based solely on God's Holy Word and
His Grace and mercy for anyone, Jew, or Gentile, who places their faith and
trust in the truth of God's Word that Jesus is the only way to eternal life.
