Psalms 26:2 Test me, Lord, and try me, examine my heart and my mind;
David's life overflowed with multiple dangers and difficulties.
He was constantly beleaguered by those who opposed him from his homeland and
other regions. His enemies harassed him where he resided and abroad. He was
hunted by those bent on causing him harm, accused by his people, and despised
by the King of Israel, whose throne he would sit on one day. Nevertheless,
David made many mistakes, but his heart remained centered on the Lord, and
loved God with all his being.
David appeals to the Lord to scrutinize his morals, uprightness,
integrity, and personality in this scripture. He calls on the Lord to evaluate his
activities and stances – his heart, mind, and motives. Biblically, the heart is
sometimes linked with a person's emotions, while the one's mind represents our
inner motivations. In his heart, David knew that he had always acted
righteously before the Lord and was professing God's promise to come to his
defense when the devil attacked him. David was sure that "God's
loving-kindness was always before him in all paths he trod. David was a person
of faith and had always trusted the Word of God. In much the same way as David,
we have the assurance of God's promises. We can rest assured that God will
always be near when Satan and his followers attack us.
Notwithstanding his faith in God and despite being a man after God's
own heart, David had to withstand many struggles and hazards, but he knew that
God would not leave him or forsake him. And as we survey the days of David the
King, it is evident God worked everything together for his good. We see
problematic incidents and various trials in the life of David, upon which God
used his will and way. The Lord took his problems and pain to increase David's
dependence and faith in Him. He used them to forward His eternal plans and
purposes for the redemption of all humankind.
Our lives would be smoother if we would develop an unswerving
faith and trust in God. Let us cultivate a steadfast faith in
God and call on
Him in tribulation, expecting Him to pardon us and bring us
through our daily difficulties. When we trust God's promises, maintain a strong
prayer life, and always give Him praise and glory, we can rest assured He will
never leave or forsake us.
