Isaiah 66:13 As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you;
and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.”
Being
a mother is, without a doubt, the most challenging job in the world. Some may
say that being a mother is not a job, in the strictest sense of the word.
However, it is nevertheless a very demanding and challenging endeavor. For some
mothers, it can be a period of spiritual dryness because sometimes a mom cannot
find time for herself. Our verse today assures us that God will comfort each of
His children as a mom comforts her child. God will most certainly hear the
cries of all his children's hearts and place His comforting hand on us when
life's challenges tend to overcome us.
On
February 27, 1991, during the Desert Storm War, Ruth Carpenter received the call of her life. Her son, Private First-Class Clayton Carpenter, had stepped
on a land mine and was dead. She grieved for the next three days, and no one
could comfort her. Then, the phone rang on the third day after receiving the
terrible news. When she answered the phone, a voice said, "Mom, it's me.
I'm alive." At first, she thought it was a cruel joke, but she realized it
was her son as the conversation continued. Later she said she laughed, cried,
and rejoiced because what seemed a hopeless situation turned out to be the most
incredible day of her life.
Another
mother cried when the Roman Soldiers nailed her son to an old, rugged Cross. In
the same manner as Ruth Dillow in our story above, she also cried and mourned
for three days. However, on that third day, her tears of sadness became tears of joy
when her son, our Lord, and Savior, walked out of the tomb where his mother had
seen him placed. We can rejoice with that mother in Jerusalem who so many years
ago watched as her son, our Lord resurrected to life. Our old lives before we
accepted Christ as our savior would confine us to the grave, we will someday be
consigned to. However, our new lives in Christ will assure there is no grave
that will hold us when the Father says to the Son: “go and bring my children home.”
On a
personal note, I would like to wish all mothers a happy and joyous Mother’s
Day.
