Luke 24:30-32 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the scriptures to us.
Sometimes we struggle to find
God’s will for our lives. If that is our case, looking at the two perplexed
disciples on their way home to Emmaus would be beneficial. They believed that
when Jesus was crucified, His entire movement had ended, and very discouraged,
they packed it all in and headed for home. Suddenly on their journey, Jesus
walked us beside them and spent some time at their home, opening their hearts,
minds, and souls to the truth of the gospel of Christ Jesus.
Many
today wonder just how Jesus reveals His will to us in this day in age. Some
might even be surprised at the simplicity of how Jesus reveals His truth to His
followers today. One way Jesus chooses to reveal His will to us is through
other believes. The mistake that the two disciples from Emmaus made was not
listening to their fellow followers of Jesus. “Early that morning, they
reported, some women had come and told them Jesus was alive; he had risen from
the grave” (Luke 24:22-23). God’s plan has not changed; he still reveals His
truth through other believers. That is why it is so critical that we meet with
our other brothers and sisters in Christ in communal worship, prayer, and bible
study (Hebrews 10:25-27)
God
also speaks to us through His Holy Word. Luke 24:27 “And beginning with Moses
and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures
concerning himself.” The second mistake that the two followers of Jesus made
was disregarding what Jesus told them (the Word of God) and clinging to their
fears. The answer to any question we have about Jesus is in God’s Holy Word;
however, there is one step we must take to find the answers we search for, we
must open the Bible and search for ourselves. Many out there today will testify
to you that while they are searching for one answer in God’s Word, He led them
to another answer they had been searching for earlier.
God
also speaks to His children through a burning heart. Luke 24:32 “They asked
each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on
the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” Sometimes God reveals His will for
us by setting our hearts and souls on fire. When we allow Jesus to set our
hearts ablaze and we get on fire for Him, the answers we seek will come with
greater intensity. All that have surrendered their hearts, minds, bodies, and
souls to Christ Jesus should be on fire for spreading the gospel to the ends of
the earth.
