1 Corinthians 1:2-3 To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be his holy people, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ—their Lord and ours: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
An airplane was on final
approach, and the wheels touched down a few seconds before the pilot intended,
which caused the plane to hammer down very hard. The pilot was standing by the
door as everyone was exiting the plane. On her way out, a little old lady asked
the pilot: "Did we land, or where were we shot down?" If some airline
passengers are dissatisfied with air travel quality, maybe the same applies to
people going to churches. The modern church of today does have its flaws, as
did the church in Corinth. As we read through Paul's letters to the Corinthian
church, in the First letter to the Corinthian Church, beginning in the tenth
verse, we will find an appeal from the Apostle Paul about their church division
over leaders.
Paul's writings did not refer
to the Church at Corinth as the Church of Corinth or the 1st Corinthian
Apostolic Church of Paul. It was called "God Church in Corinth." The
members saw their church in a tight, all-encompassing statement: God's Church. Paul
made it very clear and unambitious whose church it really was, Verse 2 begins
with “To the church of God in Corinth.” We must wonder sometimes how
churches overall would be different if we stopped referring to them as “our
church” and being calling them “God’s Church.” We also must wonder what difference
it would make when we find ourselves all tangled up in disfunction if we
reminded ourselves that it is not about us, it is about being and doing God’s
will, not our will. Paul gave the Christians at Corinth, and in extension all Christian
today some weight to attach ourselves to. Paul reminded them and us as well we
are not just a group of people hanging out to catch up on the latest gossip. In
today’s verse of today Paul pointed out that we are God’s holy people along
with all that call on the name of the Lord Christ Jesus.
It our modern-day society when
we decide to travel to a destination we have never been before we no longer must
dig out the map and study it for hours. Today we simply put our destination in
our GPS and listen for the directions. It is the same way when God calls us to a
certain ministry that we have never been involved in before. We simply go to
God in prayer, open His Holy Word and listen to the direction of the leading of
His Holy Spirit. This Sunday as we make our way to God’s church let us all
leave whatever Satan has been bothering us with behind and come together as His
children to do His will.
