1 John 1:1-2 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us.
As followers of Christ Jesus, we know we have eternal life
because of the great love shown to us by God. He adopted us as his children,
and we display his love to the world around us. We know that God loves all his
children as sons and daughters, and we have the hope of Christ Jesus indwelled
in our hearts and souls (1 John 3:1-3). As sons and daughters who love God, we
do not continue in the ways of worldly sin as the followers of Satan do (1 John
3:4-10). We are assured of the love of God and confident in His presence,
knowing that he hears and answers our prayers.
To enjoy fellowship with God, we must first know Him
personally, not by what others may have told us. People might wonder how that
happens, it occurs because He reveals Himself to us through his son, our Lord
and Savior, Christ Jesus. Before beginning a personal relationship with God, we
must know Him, not just know of him. God's most significant expression of grace
is Christ Jesus. God always shows Himself on the principle of grace. He never
discloses Himself on the wellspring of human ability. God always bases
spirituality on His ability, not on our ability.
Jesus possessed true humanity. His closest followers, his
Apostles, heard him teach; they were with Him physically every day. They saw
him perform miracles, heal the sick, causing the blind to see, and even raising
the dead. They were in the boat when the storm seemed like the end for them,
and Jesus said, "Peace be still," and the waters obeyed his command.
We can know eternal life in Christ Jesus. The heartbeat we
accept Him as our Savior and Lord and surrender our lives to him, turning our
backs on our old way of life and beginning our new life in him, we have the
assurance of eternal life (1 John 5:11-12). We cannot receive eternal life in
and through any merits of our own; it comes only through the merits of Christ
Jesus and what He did for us on the Hill of Calvary.
John refers to Jesus as the Word and “the Word of life.”
John is not talking about “a” life but “the” life, eternal life. Jesus is the
Word of life, and that life resides in Him and Him alone. Though Jesus’
physical body is in heaven at the Father’s right hand and has been for over
2,000 years, He is spiritually within us through the ministry of the Holy
Spirit! Jesus Christ lives in every true believer. Walking with Him daily, we
can nurture that fellowship with Him.
Jon Mackinney once wrote: “Jesus was so powerfully life changing, so much that He had life within Himself, that those He contacted and those who were transformed by relationship with Him through faith, became people who were willing to bear disgrace, dispersion and even death to testify concerning who He was. He was and is the Word”.
