There is something extraordinary and distinctive about
music. It can lift your spirit when you are down. When you find your mind
wandering or spirit probing, sometimes it just takes a song to help you
discover a peaceful oasis, solace, or a few moments to recuperate. However,
sometimes breaking out in a song may not be the most opportune moment.
For example, if you are shopping at a grocery store, you
may get perplexing looks from your fellow shoppers. If you were strolling down
an avenue in town, someone might think you have gone a bit off your rocker. It
will always be soothing singing with friends or even yourself at home, but it
can be quite a different situation in a public place. That was the situation in
the Psalm verse of the day for today. How can we sing a song of praise to the
Lord in a strange place? The Psalmist appeared to be in a place of discomfort
filled with people who were strangers.
God's Word tells us we are strangers in a land, not our
home. As followers and believers in Christ Jesus, we are not in our homeland;
that will come at a time down the road. We are now in a land filled with the
sin of all descriptions: wickedness, discouragement, and evil. It is where
breaking out in a praise song for our Lord and Savior might not be looked on
favorably.
However, there is some good news for us today and every
day. It is not because our surroundings have changed, or our circumstances have
greatly improved because they have not. The good news is no matter where we
find ourselves; God is always with us in the form of the indwelling of the Holy
Spirit. He will never fail or leave us abandoned, even though we might be
surrounded by difficult situations and worldly people who don't understand our
songs of praise. Let us never give up on spreading the Gospel's good news; let
us sing His praises to this lost, dark, and dying world.
