Psalms 37:31 The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.
We have often heard it said that what is in our hearts is
what will come out. There are many examples of this in life. One that quickly
comes to mind is that of someone greedy. In their heart, they have a love of
money. They focus their hearts and minds on getting more. At all costs, they
want as much money as they can get. The problem is that they often resort to
sin and wickedness to obtain it. This action can often start as simply as a
"small lie." They mislead and deceive someone. Whatever it may be, it
ends up becoming something more significant. They continue to crave more and
are soon consumed by it. But it doesn't have to be this way.
Our hearts are a place where we dwell on things. We are
either going to be dwelling on good or evil. There is no in-between. Rather
than the meditations of our heart being a breeding ground for evil, our desire
should be that our hearts dwell on good. David reminds us here of the
importance of dwelling on the things of God. If we focus on living our lives
for God, our steps will be sure. But it all starts with the meditations of our
hearts. What are we dwelling on? What are we focused on?
Satan would love nothing more than the wickedness of this
world to consume our hearts. Instead, the meditations of our hearts should be
on God! We should strive to fill our hearts with the Word of God, focused on
following and doing God's will in our lives. If we examine our heart today,
what is it filled with?
Some people would say that they are sinful beyond hope of
salvation. This concept is untrue; no matter how dark or sinful one's heart is,
God can change a person by giving them a new heart and spirit. Are we prepared
to receive it? Until we desire and receive this new heart and spirit resulting
from accepting Christ as our Lord and Savior, we can never have the life God
intended us to have. We will always have New Year's resolutions that fail.
Once we have a new heart and spirit, God will put the Holy
Spirit in us to lead, guide, and direct our every step. The changing of our
hearts comes first before the Holy Spirit dwells in it. Not the other way
around. We can make resolutions to follow God, but such will still fail without
the Holy Spirit. Temptations abound, but with the Holy Spirit in us, he will
help us to overcome it.
