Psalms 37:31 The law of their God is in their hearts; their feet do not slip.
There is common knowledge that what is in someone’s heart
will come forward, and in many instances control our lives. One prime example
of this theory is a person afflicted with greed. Their hearts are filled with a
love for material things and acquiring as much worldly wealth as possible. No
matter the cost to them or their family and friends, they desire as much fame
and fortune as they can attain.
The problem is that they often resort to sin and wickedness
to obtain it and can often start as something simple, perhaps just a “small
lie.” They mislead someone, deceive someone just to fill their own coffers.
Whatever it may be, it ends up becoming something more significant. They
continue to crave more and are soon consumed by it. But it doesn’t have to be
this way.
Our hearts are a place where we dwell on things. We are
either going to dwell on good or evil. There is no in-between. Rather than our
heart meditations being a breeding ground for evil, our desire should be that
our hearts dwell on good.
David prompts us to remember the importance of abiding by
the things of God. Our steps will ensure that we remain focused on living for
God. But it all begins with the concentrations of our hearts. The question then
becomes: what are we dwelling on and focusing our lives upon? Satan would be at
the height of his evil joy to see us all focused on the ways of the world
instead of on the desires of the heart of our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus. If
we make prayer, worship, and bible study our top daily priorities, God will
fill our hearts with love for him instead of love for worldly matters.
If we honestly examine our hearts today, what would we find
them filled with?
