Jeremiah
17:10 I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind,
to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their
deeds deserve.”
Sometimes paramedics answer a call that involves someone's heart, where there is shortness of breath or severe chest pains. The paramedics cannot see inside someone's chest, so they rely on tests and equipment. The EKG machine helps them understand what is happening while listening to the heartbeat. They do their best to discover the problem so they can start treating them quickly while speeding towards the hospital where there is much more sophisticated equipment.
However, as we read in God's Holy
Word, God doesn't need machines or tests to understand what is happening in our
minds or hearts. The fact is God can see right into our hearts. This verse
reminds us that God searches our hearts and minds. In other words, God doesn't
only test our heart; He does a complete and total heart examination! What would
He find if God examined our hearts and minds today? Would God find someone
committed to serving and living for Him? Or would He find someone with a heart
and mind filled with the desire to go after the things of this world?
When it comes to our spiritual
hearts and minds, the best thing we can do is examine them ourselves. Perhaps
sin and wickedness are in our hearts and minds, and we must start treating them
quickly! Our hearts and minds should be fully committed to God, if they are
not, we cannot fulfill God's purpose for our lives. We should ask God to help
us examine our hearts and minds, finding the things we need to address so we
can serve Him fully!
If we find ourselves skating at the
edge of the ways of the world, faltering and unfaithful in our relationship
with God our hearts and minds will eventually expose our iniquity. Sadly, there
are many people that loudly proclaim their faithfulness to God while flirting
with the world's ways.
Heart
disease and dementia are among the most prevalent reasons for death in the
world. When our verse of the day speaks of hearts and minds, it does not refer
to the physical heart and mind; it speaks of our spiritual life. Our heart will
tell no lies when we stand before God. If we truly love God, our spiritual
hearts and minds will shout it from the rooftops. On the other hand, if we are
involved in some sin we attempt to hide from the world, our spiritual hearts
and minds will eventually expose it for all to see.
