Matthew 5:17-18 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.
From the Old Testament's first word to the last word
in Revelation, the Bible is about our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus. All of the
Laws were fulfilled in the coming of the true promised Messiah. The Prophets
spoke about the coming of the Messiah to save the world. They also spoke of His
Second Coming that will usher in the "New Heaven and the New Earth."
The Bible is not just a "History Book," it is a special revelation
from God to His people concerning His plan of redemption, and it is how He
speaks to His followers and believers.
Consequently, the entire Bible is
about Christ Jesus, the Old and the New Testament tells of the salvation that
can only come through Him. Jesus said He had not come to abolish the Law (Matthew 5:17), nor was He adding any other laws or modifying any
old laws. Our Lord and Savior explained and clarified the moral and spiritual
substance of God's Law. Jesus also taught that the Laws and all of the Prophets
were pointing to Him and how He had come to free the world of Satan's slavery
and sin (Romans 8:2; Galatians
5:1).
Christ Jesus's teachings also pointed
out that the Law can never justify any sin in no uncertain terms. We are all
"dead in our trespasses and sins" (Ephesians
2:1). The Laws and Prophets in the Old Testament not
only showed us that we could never be justified by trying to keep the Law, but
they looked forward to the first and second coming of Christ Jesus, the
promised Messiah. Jesus fulfilled the
judicial, moral and ceremonial laws perfectly and taught us the perfect nature
of God.
The teachings of Jesus were complete, teaching His followers and believers the true purpose of humanity. He also answered critical questions regarding dying and living a Christ-centered life. In other words, Jesus taught and showed us how to carry out a God-honoring life, one that is in full relationship with God the Father and under God's guidance through our submission to the Holy Spirit. Jesus not only fulfilled what He taught through the Laws and the Prophets but taught that the culmination of God's plan of redemption is to reconcile all of creation under the lordship of Jesus to the glory of God the Father (1 Timothy 2:4).
