Isaiah 46:4 Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.
God is telling the Children of
Israel in this chapter of Isaiah that they weigh out and use their gold and
silver to be melted down and formed into worthless gods. The people themselves
must carry around these insignificant and meaningless gods and idols. The
opposite is true; instead of us carrying around our gods and idols, God is the
one that has us in His hands and will always maintain and liberate us.
In our verse of the day, God is
reminding them and also bringing it to our attention that He will always carry
us even to our older years. He does this because of His great Love and the fact
that He was the one that created us to begin with. The idea here is that as
parents, we will have to carry around our infants. As time goes on, we mature
and grow and no longer need our parents to carry us around. As the years turn
into decades there might be a time that the children will have to carry the
older adults around. However, we will never see the day that we will grow
beyond our dependence on God. God will always carry us even in the days that
our hair becomes grayer and greyer.
As it has been from the beginning
of time, civilization will always get to the point that they believe they have
outgrown God. When this occurs, people will rush here and there in an attempt
to find a younger god that will allow them to stay in motion with the current
race of civilization. Everything in this world has a time of expiration, even
these fragile shells we are moving around in.
The relationships that we enjoy
with other human beings in this life are a wonderful gift from God. It is most certainly
a comforting thought to know that our personal relationship with our Lord and
Savior Christ Jesus will never see an end, it will last for all time and
eternity. It is also bolstering and encouraging to know that no matter how
rocky and bumpy our paths become or how violently the storms rage outside of
our boats, God will never leave or forsake us.
