Luke
12:15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds
of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.
Since the dawn of time, covetousness has been the cornerstone of the foundation of greed. It was among
the ten commandments that Moses brought down from Mount Sinai, God's Law, and
the plans for building the tabernacle. Paul taught us that we should be content
with whatever circumstance that God has brought us to (Philippians 4:1). Peter
also tells us that God's divine power has given us all things that we need to
sustain a Godly life (2 Peter 1:3). The problem arises when we cannot
differentiate between our needs, our wants, or carnal desires. Jesus is
explaining to all that read this verse of scripture that the physical part of
our lives is unimportant when compared with the spiritual. The former is very
temporary and transitory, while the latter is eternal. It is more important to
be right in the spirit with our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus, than to have a
bank full of gold and silver. God does not look into our financial portfolio
when deciding whether or not to allow us entry into heaven; the only
measurement that matters to God is the 'Lambs Book of Life". In this verse
of Scripture, Jesus responded to a request from two brothers squabbling over
their father's inheritance.
Jesus gives them and
all whose eyes fall upon this writing a stern warning in the form of the
parable of the rich man whose only concern was having enough space to store all
of his wealth. In the parable, the rich fool's life would end that very night,
and then there would be people squabbling over all the wealth he left
behind. The point is that all the gold and silver on the planet will not
have a bearing on our eternity; only a heart, mind, body, and soul surrendered
to God will carry us into our eternal life. Many fight and struggle for the
worldly trinkets that we see as our right to have; in the end to discover it
did us more harm than if we had only let God have control of our situation. Our
covetousness masks our sinful deceptive nature, like some righteous campaign
for what we perceive as things we believe are our rights.
Greed will tighten
down around our hearts and our entire being like a vice when we place higher
importance on material things than the things of God. The Bible is filled with
promises of God that He will provide for our every need (Philippians 4:19;
Hebrews 11:6; Romans 8:32; 2 Corinthians 12:9; Psalms 81;10; 84:11; 34:10;
145:15-16; 107:9; Proverbs 10:3) to name a few.
We have the very best
that God has to offer in the form of His Son, our Lord, and Savior, Christ
Jesus. When we give Christ Jesus total and complete control of our entire
being, the sparkle and glimmer of the wealth of this world will soon lose its
attractiveness and appeal. The only thing that will matter then is our close
and personal relationship with the one that loves us as no human can. Christ
Jesus loved us so much that He took the shame and pain of the Cross of Calvary
so that we would never experience the sting of the grave but have eternal
life.
