Romans 5:7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die.
Today is celebrated in
the United States as Memorial Day; a day set aside to honor those whose love
went beyond their own wellbeing and laid down their lives for the freedom of
others. It is also a day that we bestow honor on those that continue to
volunteer in our military services. It only takes a moment to stop and shake
the hand of one in uniform and thank them for their service, whether military
or civilian service. These would be police, firefighters, EMTs, or any others
that put their life on the line for our safety and wellbeing on a daily basis.
Although freedom from tyranny is a blessing that can be measured by the way of life that exists in any Nation, there is another freedom that cannot be measured by worldly capacities or extents, and that is the freedom from sin and the clutches and influence of Satan. The freedom that we enjoy here in the United States is obvious when we see countries around the world being controlled by Dictators. However, the freedom that is ours because of the sacrifice of our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus, on the Cross of Calvary, cannot be realized except through the power and indwelling of the Holy Spirit of God. The natural person or the person that is without the Holy Spirit of God will not accept the truth from the Word of God (1 Corinthians 2:14). It is not that they cannot, but that they will not, because everyone that calls on the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans 10:13).
This life that we are living right now is a very temporary status, we have a beginning date, and we have an expiration date. There are two dates on any headstone that you visit in a cemetery, the birth date and the death date. Neither one of these dates is of any significance compared to what is between those dates, the hyphen. The hyphen is what occurred between the birth date and the death date; that is your life. It does not matter much the day we were born or even the day we die, but it is important what we do between those dates. That is the only time that we will have to change our status from lost and on our way to Hell to Saved and heaven-bound.
This Memorial Day, let us never forget the brave men and women that laid down their lives for the freedom we enjoy in this country. But more importantly, let us remember that our spiritual freedom came with the ultimate price, the life laid down by Christ Jesus. Someone asked Jesus how much He loved us, and He stretched out His arms as wide as He possibly could, and said I love you this much. Then He laid down on the Cross and allowed the Roman Soldiers to drive the heavy metal spikes through His hands and feet. Afterward, He suffered the shame and pain of a slow death on the Cross of Calvary to justify the penalty of our sins.
No one would lay down
their life for sinners, with the exception of Jesus. The unanimity and
togetherness of the Father and the Son are manifest in this. The Father gave,
and the Son laid down His life. The love of the Father and the Son is
articulated completely in the sacrifice of Christ Jesus on the Cross. Sin does
not have the power to prevent the Love of God from engulfing humanity.
If you are saved, washed in the precious blood of Christ Jesus, and know that you are on your way to heaven, make sure that you daily thank and praise the One that made that possible, Christ Jesus. Also, remember that every day is a spiritual Memorial Day in which we should worship, praise, and thank God for our freedom from sin and Satan. We should also remember that there are millions, if not billions, of people that do not know Christ Jesus as their Lord and Savior; we, as believers and followers of Christ, are the tools that God uses to bring the Gospel to the lost of this world (Acts 1:8).
