Leviticus 23:1-2 The Lord said to Moses, “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘These are my appointed festivals, the appointed festivals of the Lord, which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies.
Leviticus 23 pronounces and
designates seven yearly festivals that God directed the Israelites to keep and
celebrate. These festivals, which were abundant with symbolism and prophecy,
were called “my appointed festivals” by God. They profoundly belonged to God,
and He gave them to Israel as holy assemblies and sacred gatherings.
The central thesis in these
festivals is gratitude for the things that God has blessed humanity with and
what He continues to do through all time and eternity. God gave these festivals
to celebrate specific things on specified days. However, every one of these
special celebrations pointed to one event, the most significant event in human
history, the coming of the promised Messiah, our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus (Colossians
2:16-17). This concept is what Christ Jesus was referring to when he told
His followers that He did not come to end the Law but to fulfill the Law (Matthew
5:17).
We should regularly remember
demonstrations of the love, grace, and mercy from a loving God. When we recall
that there is nothing that God does for us that we deserve, and we can only
repay Him through our gratitude, we should see every day as a blessing and an
opportunity to worship and praise Him. An unthankful heart is a callous,
unloving, doubting, and rebellious spirit. We must regularly remember what God
has done for us as His Children. (Psalms 143:8).
There will be a time in every
life when we begin to forget certain things. I do not know about you, but I
find myself having to keep reminder notes. The problem with forgetting what God
has done and continues to do for us is that it will lead to complaining. Not
remembering all the wonderful blessings that God bestows on us every day will
allow Satan to attempt to convince us that God is unfair towards us. Satan will
try to convince us that God does not hear our prayers. Satan’s primary
objective in all of this deceit is to create anger towards God in our hearts.
Forgetting the wonderful blessing God bestows upon us every heartbeat of our
lives will also cause us to become envious of what He does for our Brothers and
sisters in Christ, instead of rejoicing with them as we should.
When someone makes a special
effort to do something for us, we often send them a thank you card and
sometimes a special gift. The question before us is what we can do for God for
all of the love, grace, mercy, and unique gifts He bestows upon us every day.
We can find the answer to that query in the Book of Romans (Romans 12:1).
The giving of ourselves to God as a living sacrifice. As Christ Jesus laid His
life down on the Cross of Calvary, we should lay our lives down for Him. Laying
our lives down does not mean going out in one flash of glory, but surrendering
ourselves daily in the spreading of the Gospel to this lost, dark and dying
world.
