Bible Verse of the Day Tuesday July 20th 2021

Psalm 1 Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither whatever they do prospers. Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. Therefore, the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

This Psalm starts off talking about those that God has blessed, which is a state of extreme joyfulness, gladness, happiness, and contentment. This state of blessedness is achievable by all people. This blessing is bestowed by God regardless of how much or how little gold or silver one possesses. It is not dependent on one's place in the annals of history or their political or social standing. A person that God has bestowed blessings upon will not get involved in certain things. There are specific paths the blessed person will not walk upon or even stand-in, and specific seats they will not sit on. As spoken of here in this Psalm, God's Law is referring to the Word of God, not just the first five (5) Books of the Law.

The blessed by God person not only "delights" in the Word of God but "meditates" on it "day and night." Charles Spurgeon once said that all people must have something that delights them, which brings them supreme pleasure, and that God did not design the human heart to live in a vacuum. He also said that if a person did not receive the filling of the Holy Spirit of God, they would gravitate towards the "unworthy and disappointing.

The "wicked" spoken of in this Psalm are the ones that believe that they do not need God and falsely trust in themselves for their wellbeing in life, who live in step with the world's standard instead of the standards of God. The writer of this Psalm points out the way of the wicked is a temporary, fleeting way of life, and they will be blown away like the dust of the ground. However, those God watches over will be led to the paths of righteousness by Christ Jesus through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

In the Middle East, in the days when God inspired the writing of this Psalm, much of the Landscape was a barren desert. The only way a tree could get the nourishment, or "water of life" was if it was planted close by a stream of water. So likewise, the only way we will ever get the spiritual "nourishment" we need is if we plant ourselves close to the "water of life," that is Christ Jesus (Revelation 22:1-2; John 7:38; John 4:13-14; Isaiah 12:3).
