Bible Verse of the Day Sunday August 29th 2021

Psalm 90:2,4 Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.

Psalms 90 was composed by Moses, the only Psalm written by him. It is known to be the oldest Psalm, written sometime around 1440 BC. It is known by many as “the prayer of Moses.” This Psalm speaks of the eternal nature of God and the temporary and fleeting nature of humanity. In verse 1, Moses says that God has been “our dwelling place throughout all generations.” The grace and mercy of God is the only “safe harbor” we as humans have in this world of evil. Christ Jesus is the solid rock on which we stand; He is our Shepard, our creator, our sustainer, our Savior, and the captain of our ship. This knowledge is comforting when that ship is tossed around with the waves of upheaval and turmoil brought about by our enemy, Satan.

A thousand years is but a blink of the eye when compared to the eternity of God. Peter tells us that a thousand years is like a day to God (2 Peter 3:8). Peter quoted this Psalm when he wrote the verse of scripture just mentioned. What might seem like to us, in this life, lasting an eternity, is just a blink of an eye in God’s sight. In the eyes of a small child, an hour might seem like an eternity, which to us could seem like a few moments. There is a proportional gap between a second and a million years; however, there is none between time as we know it and eternity. It is a sad state of affairs, but most people living in the world today, as well as all-time past and future, do not grasp this concept of time and eternity.

For this reason, most people focus on the temporal instead of the eternal; consequently, time passes unnoticed and ignored, compared to a state of sleep. When it is over, and one reaches the end of life, all the fluff and ruffle that had been so important becomes worth nothing.

During the earthly ministry of Jesus, he said that there would only be a few that found the narrow path to eternity (Matthew 7:14). In verse 12 of this Psalm, Moses asks God to teach us to number our days. This does not mean we are to count every day of our lives literally. However, this symbolism does mean that we should spend all of our days with a surrendered heart to our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus. Paul wrote to the church at Ephesus: “Be very careful then, how you live, not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:15-16).
