James 1:9-11 Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wildflower. For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls, and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business.
In our everyday lives, both poverty and wealth can draw us away from God in the world today. Both the lack and abundance of money can cause us to lose sight of the importance of a surrendered life to Christ Jesus. Either one of these margins can cause us to ignore or disregard the promptings and guidance of the Holy Spirit as we become too consumed with money. Having more money than you need to sustain your everyday life or a lack thereof can sometimes be a frequent source of major trials in the lives of followers and believers in Christ Jesus. God is not at all concerned about how much or how little money we have in our coffers; he looks at the hearts of people, not at their bank account. To God, it is not how rich or poor we are materially; it is how rich or poor we are spiritually. It is about our relationship with our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus. Money is not evil or bad; it is the love of money that begins our gradual slipping away from Christ Jesus (1 Timothy 6:10). Additionally, James is speaking of the fleeting existence of not only our gold and silver but of our lifespans here in this temporary world. If people would only realize that what we build here on this earth will soon crumble and fall, but the treasures we store up in heaven will last for eternity (Matthew 6:19-21).
As followers and believers in Christ Jesus, we have blessings and talents so that we might be a blessing to other people. It is not God’s intention for us to hold on to what He has blessed us in this life for ourselves, but to use it to further His kingdom and help others around us. This verse of Scripture comes among a discussion of trials and tribulations. This message speaks to believers and followers of Christ, teaching us how having too much money or too little money can lead to trials and tribulations. Focusing on money instead of Christ Jesus will hinder our walk and our service in Christ Jesus. Therefore, it is very critical that we do not allow Satan to set our sights on how much money we have or do not have, but to remain faithful to the calling God has placed on us. It is not about what we can do to further our material status in this life; it is about how we put our faith and trust in God to see to our every need (Matthew 6:26-27).
