Matthew 6:24 No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
Our
loving Father in Heaven wants the very best for us as His children; however,
too many never get to experience these great and beautiful blessings from
God. The problem is that we want to settle for blessings like money, security,
or other material blessings. These things are considered blessings, but they
are second-rate blessings because we can do much better.
When most Christians and non-Christians speak of being blessed, their minds often drift towards material things, like automobiles, fancy homes, boats, and significant employment. There is no question that these things are from God, and they are a blessing. However, in some cases, these second-rate blessings will cost us something of much greater value. Sometimes, these second-rate blessings will most likely cost us many more incredible blessings. If all we are looking for is to gain materially or financially, we are losing out on the greatest blessing that God has for us. Jesus tells us, from our Verse of the Day, that you cannot have it both ways; you cannot serve two masters, God and Money. Money is not necessarily a bad thing; it is the attraction people have to it that causes the problems (1 Timothy 6:10).
If we miss out on a Sunday Worship Service to go out for a day of relaxation, our relaxation day is of more value to us than spending time with our church family in worship and praise to God. Likewise, if we make a bank load of money but neglect our family in doing so, then the money is a more valuable blessing to us than our family. In this case, we have blessings, but they are second-rate blessings; we have settled for less than what God has in mind for us. Satan is not only a very evil creature but a very subtle one as well. He will fool us into thinking that having a lot of money is essential in the world. That we should seek after this no matter the cost, but if our acquisition of silver and gold ends up costing us our family, we have traded a second-rate blessing for a much greater one.
Let us pray that the Lord would help us open our spiritual eyes and spiritual ears and see the greatest blessings are relationships with our fellow brothers and sisters, as well as our relationship with our family, eternal life, our service to Christ Jesus and His gospel, and a sweet daily walk with our Lord and Savior. These are first-rate, great, and wonderful blessings.
Jesus has a question for every one of us: What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? (Mark 8:36) I believe we all know the proper response to that question, the First-Rate blessings. Let us not settle for any second-rate blessings when Jesus is ready to hand us a coffer full of first-rate, great, and wonderful true blessings.
