Hebrews 2:14-15 Since the children have flesh and blood, he
too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of
him who holds the power of death —that is, the devil — and free those who all
their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.
As long as we are in our
physical bodies, we all will live with human nature, so our Lord and Savior
Christ Jesus took on that nature as well. In our human lives, we will have to
endure much suffering, so Christ Jesus suffered throughout His earthly life and
then weathered the ultimate torment so that He could pay a sin debt for all
people that we could never pay. The sacrifice made by Christ Jesus on the Cross of Calvary broke Satan's power over
the world's people. Not that Satan's evil reign ended at that time, but that he
would have no power over us because of our faith and trust in Christ Jesus.
After the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus, when He was about
to ascend back to His glory in Heaven, He gave the command to "go and make
disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:19). This evangelism was possible
because of the victory of Christ Jesus over Satan, who had long held
illegitimate power over the world. This false influence had been stamped out
and put in the loving hands of the legitimate Lord and Savior of the World
(Matthew 28:18). This directive made it possible for all Christians to carry
out the mission left to all of His children (Acts 1:8).
The substitutionary work
done on our behalf by Christ Jesus on the Cross of Calvary destroyed the power
of death and consequently any power Satan might have over humanity. Our Lord
and Savior Christ Jesus is concerned about the suffering we must endure in this
lifetime, so much so that He went through the suffering that we encounter daily
so that He might relate to our tribulations in every situation. However, Christ
Jesus did not just carry in Himself a sympathy, understanding, and compassion
for the pain and suffering we go through in this life. He further extinguished
and terminated the fear and anxiety that Satan attempts to fill our hearts with.
Thus, Jesus has set us free from the false power of Satan and all of his evil
followers, both spiritual and human. Consequently, through the power of His
Holy Word and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we can live a life of victory,
free from all fear and trepidation.
