John 1:17 . For the
law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
Christ Jesus, the Word of God (John 1:1 & 14),
is the supplier of the grace that we know and can experience in this life.
Grace is all that God does for us, centered and established through the Work of
Christ Jesus on the Cross of Calvary. Although we do not deserve it, the grace
that we receive because of Christ Jesus is inexhaustible and endless. Just as
eternity has no end, the grace we know through our Savior and creator never
comes to an end. Although there will be times that some grace that we have may
dissipate, there will never be a time that God does not make available more
grace. There is an unbounded and unlimited supply of grace that will be there
for us in every step we take.
When we stand on a seashore and watch the waves come
in, we know that there will always be another. For generations, our ancestors
have stood on the same beaches and watched the waves break on the same
seashore. Although the waves are not the same waves we are looking at, they
came from the same ocean. There is an endless supply of waves breaking on the
seashores as long as day and night continue. This illustration is the way of
God’s Grace. However, the grace that our parents, grandparents, and
great-grandparents knew has dissipated; there will always be more waves of grace
coming our way and coming for our children, grandchildren, and
great-grandchildren. God’s grace is unending in this life. Some say that we
will not need the Grace of God in the life to come, but our eternal life is
made possible because of the Grace of God.
The Law came through Moses, but grace comes through
Christ Jesus. Jesus did not come to end or reject the Law; He came to fulfill
the Law. The Law is the standard, pattern, and guideline by which God measures
the righteousness of humanity. Although we could never come close to that
standard, Christ Jesus could and did fulfill all the prerequisites of the Law
on our behalf (Romans 8:2-4). It is an encouraging blessing to know that
although we will never be able to keep the Law and not break it in even one
small aspect (James 2:10), Jesus has lived the perfect life keeping the whole
Law for us. Thus, we have the endless supply of waves and waves of God’s Grace
because of the sacrifice that our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus, made on the
Cross of Calvary.
