Proverbs 19:8 The one who gets wisdom loves life; the one who cherishes understanding will soon prosper.
First, we must distinguish between the scope and latitude of worldly wisdom and Godly wisdom. Worldly wisdom says it’s all about me and what I can gain that will fill my earthly coffers. Too many people today use this verse and many similar verses of scripture to defend and bolster their claims of self-worth and self-achievement. There are certain expectations of society upon people that gauge a person’s worth and value. These include, but are not exclusive to, what kind of car you drive, how massive the house you live in, the style of clothes you wear, to where you do your shopping.
On the other hand, Godly wisdom says that our worth is not gauged by any material things but by how our creator views us. God values every person on this earth so much and so highly that He became flesh and dwelled among us. Our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus, lived a life of self-sacrifice and humility, seeking what good He could do for those around Him. Then when his earthly life ended, He voluntarily and joyfully laid down and allowed the Roman government to nail Him to the Cross because he viewed each one of us with great value (Hebrews 12:2).
There is much writing out today as to the theme of this verse of scripture, and it has to do with how we should learn to love ourselves. This wisdom mentioned here in this verse is not worldly wisdom but Godly wisdom. Once we realize that there is no comparison between the temporary and fleeting false joy from earthly wisdom and the eternal ecstasy from Godly wisdom, we will then understand what love of life is. Loving life is about love for our Lord and Savior, self-sacrifice, and viewing the needs of others higher than our wants and desires (Matthew 22:36-40).
This verse in the Book of Proverbs ends with a reward for understanding Godly wisdom and prosperity. But unfortunately, there is an entire branch of a false gospel founded on this principle, the Prosperity Gospel. The wolves in sheep’s clothing that spew out Satan’s lies in the Prosperity Gospel movement will say that the gospel is all about you and what material wealth you can gain from the gospel. They mean that as long as you come to their meetings and fill their coffers, God will then provide every material thing you might desire.
True joy and true happiness do not come from material things but from things of God. Spiritual prosperity comes from having a close personal relationship with the one that gave His earthly life so that we will know eternal life with Him. Our spiritual prosperity is in direct proportion with our love for God and others above ourselves.
