Mark 1:16-18 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will send you out to fish for people." So, at once, they left their nets and followed him.
Jesus was walking along the seashore and called two fishermen to follow Him as they were plying their trade, which they did every day. We can only imagine that morning when they arose; these two brothers did not imagine that this day would be any different than any other day catching fish. This meeting with Jesus was not the first encounter Peter and Andrew had with our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus. Andrew had been standing with John the Baptist when he introduced Jesus to the World as "the Lamb of God." Andrew went straightaway and found his brother Simon and told him they had seen the true promised Messiah. When Andrew brought Simon Peter to the one that was the true Messiah, Jesus looked at Peter and said "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" which, when translated, is Peter (John 1:35-42).
We all have a testimony of when we first met Christ Jesus when He called us to follow Him and become fishers of people. As we see in this story of Peter and Andrew, they had met Jesus knowing that He was the true Messiah and accepting Him as such. This meeting with Jesus is the pattern of Salvation, accept Christ Jesus and believe that He is the true promised Messiah, God in the flesh. These two men that Jesus chose that day were void of any theological credentials, nor did they have any status in the World as a whole. Jesus chose these two people for what He could do through them, not for who they were or what they could do.
The invitation that Andrew and Peter received from Jesus displayed what Christianity is all about. Being a Christian is not about any religious organizations or practices, nor is it based on rules or regulations. Even though we should all, as born again, washed in the blood, followers, and believers in Christ Jesus, want to help others, Christianity is not even about that. What Christianity is all about is following Jesus when He calls us to follow Him. Jesus called those two people on the seashore that day to be fishers of people, which is what Jesus is, the most excellent fisher of people ever. The beautiful and most impressive part of this is that Jesus does not need us to do this work of spreading the Gospel to the ends of the earth, but He allows us to work with Him. Our Lord and Savior desires that people do His work. So, first, He called those two; then He called the twelve, then He called thousand and hundreds of thousands, then millions upon millions down through the ages.
This procedure is where we come into the picture; when we accepted Christ Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we accepted the call to be fishers of people. His last words as He ascended to Heaven was to carry the good news of the Gospel to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). There are no exceptions; Jesus saves us to serve. Some might say: "I just don't have the ability to talk to people about the saving grace of Christ Jesus." But like with Peter and Andrew that Day on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, Jesus is not looking for our ability; all He seeks is our availability.
