Psalms 142:5-7 I cry to you, Lord; I say, you are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living. Listen to my cry, for I am in desperate need; rescue me from those who pursue me, for they are too strong for me. Set me free from my prison, that I may praise your name. Then the righteous will gather about me because of your goodness to me.
An
old saying from many centuries ago goes, "the straw that broke the camel's
back." Usually, the Camel's load is not the issue; it is the extra load.
Camels are born with the ability to carry a significant load for many miles.
The problem is the overload, that load that we choose to carry we don't have to
carry.
David
asks for help from the Lord when he realizes that the load coming on him is
more than he can carry. His pursuers were more substantial that he had the
power to protect himself. In other words, David waited until he reached the
bottom before He called on the Lord. We will have pursuers coming after us that
seem much too strong for us to defend ourselves. There is one pursuer that
comes after us daily, that is Satan. We are certainly not strong enough to
fight the evil one on our own, but God is ready to stand in our defense.
When
Jesus spent forty days in the Wilderness with no food or water, Satan came after
Him because He was hungry and thirsty. Jesus used the defense that He had with
Him, the Word of God. There is no power, either human or spiritual, that can overcome
God's Holy Word. Satan is a powerful entity, but he cannot overcome God's Word.
When
we find ourselves in a battle that we feel overcome and do not know which way
to turn, remember God is always there. We have the same weapon in our arsenal
that Jesus had with Him in the wilderness. That weapon is the most deterrent in
Heaven and on earth. That weapon is God's Holy Word. Satan will have to flee
from us when we use that weapon on him. He is not afraid of us because there is
nothing we can do to send him away. However, Satan shutters at the thought of
someone using the Word of God against Him. The reason for that is he has no
defense and cannot overcome God's Word. The most significant part about this is
that Satan knows He cannot stand on the battle fired when someone uses the Word
of God against Him.
David
was alone and had no one to turn to, but when he cried out to the Lord, he
could, with assurance, know that God was his refuge. In the land of Israel in that
day, there were cities of refuge where those could go for protection in times
of trouble. However, David found his sanctuary, not in a physical place, but
the Lord. The Verse of today is the prayer that David prayed.
