John 17:23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
In
and through Christ Jesus, His followers, then and today can know unity with the
Father (John 17:21). Jesus is the facilitating connection between humanity and
Father God. This bible verse demonstrates two distinct purposes for unity among followers and believers in Christ Jesus.
Number
one is that all who believe in and follow Jesus would be living in a state of
constant maturing in our spiritual walk with Jesus. The number two purpose, as
referenced above, is that through us, as His followers and believers, the world
might come to know the love, grace, and saving power that comes from a personal
relationship with Jesus.
Jesus
has already accomplished a unity for us with God; however, it is something that
takes daily growth as long as we are in this life. Our growth towards unity
with the Father is a daily transition that will require much prayer, bible
study, group worship, and a heart for sharing the gospel to the lost of this
world (2 Peter 3:18).
Unity
among followers and believers in Christ is how the world will know Jesus and
the purpose for His earthly ministry. This verse spotlights the culmination of
Jesus’ ministry on the Cross of Calvary (the world will know that you sent me).
Unsaved people will not realize God loves them (John 3:16) because Satan will
blind their understanding. This valuable lifesaving information is something
those that are one with Christ Jesus should be sharing with the world.
Father
God and God the Son, Christ Jesus is one but at the same time distinct from
each other. As believers, we are to be one with other Christians and still
maintain our personal walk with Christ Jesus. All of us as believers depend on
God individually and as the body of Christ. Our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus,
did not pray for any version of Church unity; his prayer was for spiritual
unity. The form of unity that Jesus wants for us as His children can only be
developed through our knowledge of the Holy Word of God, a daily prayer life,
and service to God and others.
