James 4:13-14 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.
One
of my favorite stories concerning not knowing what tomorrow might bring is from
2 Kings chapter 20. King Ben-Hadad of Aram mustered a group of other Kings and
threatened to attack Israel. He sent a message to King Ahab of Israel telling
him there would not be enough dust in Samaria to give each of his soldiers a
handful. King Ahab said that one who dawns his armor should not boast as one
taking it off (1 Kings 20:11).
We
only have today, yesterday is in the past, and we cannot get it back. It cannot
be changed or altered. We must take advantage of today, for tomorrow comes with
no guarantees. The lost soul may say, "I am not ready to accept Christ
today" however, we do not know there will be a tomorrow. As followers of
Christ, we might put off sending that note asking for forgiveness this day;
however, we do not know that tomorrow will come. Procrastination steals from us
valuable time and golden opportunities.
There
can only be anguish when we make plans to leave God out of the picture. So
likewise, our gold and silver will not bring us comfort, only distress when we
develop planes for prosperity without putting God first. Having material wealth
is one thing, but being wealthy towards God is altogether different (Luke
12:16-21). Our lives will be much more pleasing when we arrive at where we put
our total dependence on God. The faithful follower of Christ Jesus will
inevitably ask for God's direction and, more importantly, follow the leading
guidance of the Holy Spirit.
God
does not allow us to see tomorrow because if He did, we would not be able to
withstand the pressure of knowing what tomorrow brings. By managing one
struggle at a time, we can deal with the knocks and bruises that come with the
valleys of life. We can bank our complete faith and trust on the truth that God
knows what is best for us. Consequently, God tells us not to fret about
tomorrow (Matthew 6:34).
If a
building designer has one plan in mind and the builder has another method, the
results will be catastrophic. God is the architect of our being from the day He
created the first humans on this planet. Everything that occurs in our lives,
whether we view it as good or bad, happens in and through God's will (Romans
8:28).
Knowing
God's Word will do us no good unless we apply it to our daily walks of life,
and ignoring the Word will eventually distort our understanding of what God is
attempting to teach us (John 13:17). Therefore, our Christian walk is dependent
on comprehending the principles of the Word of God and applying them to our
daily lives.
