Psalm 16:1-2 Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge. I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.”
David was talking to God when
he Penned this Psalm; he knew that in the Lord, he would have protection and be
kept in the safety of the arms of God. The tenor of the Psalm does not reflect
desolation or grievances; it reflects the joy David knew through his
relationship with God. No matter what dark valleys David found himself in, he
always praised God's protection. The most incredible honor we can show God is
to tell Him how we love and trust Him.
God will always be there when
we ask Him to safeguard us from the excitements and frills of this world. So,
likewise, God will never let us down when we ask Him to preserve us from Satan
and not let us fall into temptation above anything we can bear (1 Corinthians
10:13). So, likewise, God is faithful to sustain us from ourselves when we fall
into a temptation to chase after envy, selfishness, pride, or slothfulness.
This Psalm voices the joy
David experienced in his life because he trusted in God and knew fellowship
with God, even though he faced distressing physical dangers. David had often
told the Lord that He was his only hope. David went on to tell God he had no
good apart from His Lord and Savior. This appeal is most likely a reference to
David's knowing he had no goodness apart from God.
It would be very advisable for
us to follow the example of David in his writings. The Psalms are full of
accounts that David had with the Lord. David's conversations that we read about
in the psalms are akin to someone speaking to their best friend. An old Gospel
hymn is entitled "What a friend we have in Jesus." It would be highly
advisable to put Jesus on the very top of our friends' list. In worldly social
media, we are always attempting to get people on our friend's list or get our
names on others' lists. These friends’ lists will one day fade away, But Jesus'
friend list is for eternity.
