1 John 5:13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.
Assurance of Salvation is one
of the most debated issues in the gospel of Christ Jesus. Some say there is no
such thing, furthermore, contending that one can somehow lose their salvation. Our
salvation rests completely on the testimony of God and the promises He made in
His Holy Word, not on any good works we might see ourselves doing. Believing
that somehow, we might do something or fail to do something that would warrant God
removing our salvation has to be a miserable and frightening way of life. If I
could lose my salvation the question is what sin I have to commit, or does it boil
down to how many sins I committed today. It would be hard to go to sleep at
night wondering if I did something or failed to do something today and my
salvation is gone. This means that if I die in my sleep I will not be going
home to be with my savior.
Placing our faith and trust in
Christ Jesus and believing that his sacrifice on the Cross of Calvary paid our
sin debt is the only way to salvation, and assurance that we will be with God
for eternity. Eternal life is a free gift from God, we can not earn it and we certainly
do not deserve it (Romans 6:23). We cannot receive a gift unless we extend our
hands and accept it. To be assured of salvation we must extend our hands to God
and receive the gift of salvation. We belittle and demean God if we attempt to offer
Him religion or morality for salvation (Acts 13:38-39; Acts 16:30-31; Romans
4:5; Galatians 3:22).
Losing our salvation and
regaining it multiple times in our lives would be symbolically crucifying our
Lord and Savior over and over again. If we lack the assurance of our salvation,
we will certainly not experience the joy of our salvation. The last words Jesus
spoke before returning to His glory in Heaven was that we should spread the good
news of the Gospel to the world (Acts 1:8). How can we project the joy of our
salvation to the lost souls we are witnessing to when we are not even sure of
our own salvation?
Some might say “I gave my life
to Christ” or “I asked Jesus into my heart.” These are two very important
things that we must do, however, the only path to salvation is placing our faith
and trust in the substitutionary work of Christ Jesus on the Cross of Calvary
for the forgiveness of our sins.
