Romans 12:15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.
This
verse does not cover sympathy but empathy for other people. Sympathy is biased
emotionality, whereas empathy is the capability to connect to someone's
situation impartially. Empathy is the proficiency to put ourselves in the place
of others during times of trials and tribulation. When we truly love others
with empathy, we will be able to put ourselves in someone else's place. In
other words, it is our God-given ability to place ourselves into other people's
needs. We do not walk this life alone. God has provided us with the fellowship
of the people around us to surrender our lives to Him and return home one day.
One
that has allowed Satan to harden their heart will not have compassion towards
those around them suffering through dark valleys in their lives. A person with
compassion will never see another's calamity with gladness. Christ Jesus wept
at His friend Lazarus' funeral (John 11:35). Along life's highways, we will
have golden opportunities to share in one another's sorrow and celebrate with
each other's joys. Both rejoicings in others' joy and shedding tears with those
around us during great trials indicate true Christian love.
It
would be impossible to solo through our Christian walk with Our Lord and
Savior. We need each other in the same manner that we need Christ Jesus. The
fantastic news about our journey through this life is that we do not have to
walk it alone. In and through the indwelling of His Holy Spirit, we most
certainly have God to lead, guide, and direct our every step. God has provided
Christian fellowship because although our salvation is a personal thing, it is
not private. We are to share our salvation experiences with those around us.
For our Christian Brothers and Sisters, it is an opportunity to share in our
sanctification process. For the lost in our world, sharing our faith is an
opportunity for them to come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
The
plan of Jesus from the first Christian Churches planted by Paul and many others
was for the body members to love and support each other. So, when he was coming
to the end of his earthly ministry, Jesus prayed that there would be unity in
His future church (John 17:20-23).
