Exodus 28:29 “Whenever Aaron enters the Holy Place, he will bear the names of the sons of Israel over his heart on the breastpiece of decision as a continuing memorial before the Lord.
The High Priest of Israel was to completely identify with the
people he represented before God in the Temple. He was to be one with all the
people in affection and actions. He wore the breastplate on his chest over his
heart with the stones that represented all the tribes of Israel. The High
Priest's appeal before God for the people was a two-fold memorial. On the one
hand, he was pleading for God's love and grace and, on the other hand, placing
the people in the mercy of God's power.
For a brief time in the
Temple, the High Priest surrendered himself to the authority and power of God.
While in the Temple representing the people, Arron was the Nation of Israel,
and Israel was Arron. The twelve precious stones on the Brest-plate worn by
Arron and the succeeding High-priest over their hearts would represent all the
people before almighty God.
The all-inclusive image of
an intercessor is to bring people before the throne of God. So, when we ponder
intercessory prayer, for what are we appealing to God? First, we're
supplicating in the interest of others. Second, we are bringing others before
God, laying their lives before God, laying what is happening before God, and
saying, "God, please bless this individual and see to their needs. Third,
we are asking God to mend the heart of someone who just lost a close family
member. Finally, we are imploring on behalf of other people who need the loving
touch of God's hand in their lives.
When Jesus went to the
Cross on our behalf, He carried the names and hearts of everyone who would
accept His sacrifice on the Cross. Jesus is still our High Priest today and
will always be there to represent us before an almighty God. He is the one that
goes to God the Father for our benefit, that gave the penance to cover our
transgressions. We petition and beseech God through our Lord and Savior Christ
Jesus and will ceaselessly appeal. We'll persistently adulate Jesus for that
while we are here in this life. Then when our mission here is complete, we will
spend eternity worshiping and praising God for sending our High-Priest to pay a
sin debt that we could never pay.
Now, Christ is our answer and Truth. God has made Himself known
through His son Christ Jesus in these last days. He is the light of the world,
our faithful witness, and He is the Truth. We gain the spirit of Truth through
Him that will lead us into all Truth (Hebrews 1:1-2; John 1:18).
