Matthew 7:12 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.
Today's
verse is one of the most popular Bible verses; many quote it but do not know
its precise location in the Bible. The world refers to this scripture verse as
the "Golden Rule." It is unchanging, authentic, and significant, and
if truly practiced, this world we live in would be a different place. If we
would all practice the Golden Rule in our family units, with those we work with
and work for, along with the people we meet on the highway and interstates,
there would be a calm and peace unrecognizable in the world.
The practicing of the Golden
Rule shows our love for others. The obligation to practice this reciprocity
falls to the believer in Christ to assess how they would like to be treated by
others. Jesus' "Golden Rule," says that how we want others to treat
us is how we treat others. Some refer to this principle as self-regulated
mutuality. As followers and believers in Christ Jesus, we show our love to
others by being sensitive to their interests and well-being. This action
includes how we treat others and establishing an interest in their activities
and interests.
When Jesus first spoke of what
would become the Golden Rule, it had been long stated negatively. For example,
people of that day would say: You should never do something for or to your
neighbor that you don't want them to do for or to you. However, Jesus reverses
the negative thinking of the world and states: Do unto others as you would have
them do unto you.
Jesus taught us that this
humble principle, the Golden Rule, encapsulates all that the Law and Prophets
spoke about how we treat others. Therefore, if we followed the Golden Rule, we
would naturally follow all the laws concerning our relationships with others.
Let us all thank and glorify
our Father in Heaven for all the riches and gifts he bestows upon us.
Unfortunately, there are not enough words in all the world's languages to show
our appreciation for how God treats us and the gifts He bestows upon us. All we
can do is go to Him in prayer and ask Him to confer the power on us to treat
others the way He treats us.
